GARTSIDE, 86, of 5100 Burkholder Road, Chambersburg, died Monday, April 12, 2004, in Chambersburg Hospital. Born May 12, 1917, in Akron, Ohio, he was the son of the late Walter and Sylvia (Cupfender) Gartside. Mr. Gartside was a 1935 graduate of Hazleton Senior High School. His wife, Helen Kaiser-Gartside, died Jan. 30, 1993. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1937 during the Depression, serving for nearly four and a half years. During the war, Mr. Gartside worked at defense plants, including American Car and Foundry Co. in Berwick, Glenn L. Martin plant in Baltimore and Baldwin Locomotive Co. near Philadelphia. He served in the U.S. Air Force from September 1943 until being discharged in November 1945. Throughout his career in the commercial/graphic arts field, Mr. Gartside was employed at printing plants and for advertising agencies. He was a member of Fetterhoff Chapel United Methodist Church. Mr. Gartside is survived by two sons, David A. Safko of Lake Nuangola and S. Kent Gartside of Fort Collins, Colo.; one stepdaughter, Barbara Petroff of Chambersburg; two stepsons, Paul G. Kaiser Jr. and Maurice L. Kaiser, both of Chambersburg; six stepgrandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; one brother, W. Glenn Gartside of Chambersburg; two sisters, Sylvia R. Murray of Sykesville, Md., and Doris Leeper of Pittsburgh; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel H. Gartside. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home Inc., Chambersburg, with the Revs. Patrick B. Jones and Clinton Bingaman officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services Saturday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. --
